Although Halloween is looking a little different this year, there’s no reason why you can’t get into the spirit of things from the comfort of your own home. Try your hand at whipping up a Bloody Caesar cocktail, taken from Signe Johansen’s Spirited recipe book – with the word ‘bloody’ in the title, this one’s a no-brainer for All Hallows’ Eve.
1 heaped tsp celery salt
handful of ice cubes
200ml Clamato (substitute with fresh tomato juice or plain tomato juice from the supermarket)
mix of black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, horseradish sauce, gherkin pickle juice, or whatever seasoning you like and have available, to taste
25-50ml vodka
for the garnish:
large cooked prawns
gherkins
olives
pickled chillies
beans
celery stick
1. Start by dipping your highball glass upside down in water to wet the rim. In a small bowl, have your celery salt ready and gently twist the highball rim so it absorbs the salt.
2. Fill the glass with ice, pour the Clamato in and season to your taste. Add the vodka and give the drink a good stir.
3. Garnish to your heart’s content – as a nod to the maritime flavour of the Clamato, you can add a large prawn or two on a cocktail stick, along with olives and gherkins.
