Style File: Big Little Lies

Big Little Lies, Season 2, Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Zoë Kravitz and Shailene Woodley

As Big Little Lies returns to our screens, we look back on our favourite characters and each of their distinctive styles. With an all-star cast featuring Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, Shailene Woodley and the addition of Meryl Streep for season two, it’s clear that considerable planning goes into the costume designs for this series.

Each woman’s personality, wealth and social status were carefully considered before defining her wardrobe in season one and at a closer look, what they wear says a lot about their character, private lives, aspirations and experiences. We can’t wait to see what the next season brings for each character and her wardrobe.

Madeleine Martha Mackenzie

Reese Witherspoon’s character Madeleine Mackenzie’s wardrobe revolves around a palette of bold colours, classic prints and feminine silhouettes. Rarely seen without a designer top handle handbag on her arm, she rotates a collection of high heels and completes her looks with cropped cardigans or a sleek burgundy trench. These put-together looks compliment her strong, opinionated character, whilst hinting at a desire to constantly keep up appearances.

Renata Klein

Purposeful and structured silhouette’s are Renata’s signature style, who mixes timeless staples with a glamorous edge. Laura Dern’s character remains focused on how others perceive her and she wants us to know she has worked hard for all the assets she owns. We’re talking high-end labels and luxury accessories aplenty.

Celeste Wright

Former lawyer Celeste Wright, played by Nicole Kidman, goes on perhaps the biggest emotional journey in season one. She layers turtlenecks, tailoring, classic coats and a host of romantic dresses, all in muted tones. Her character always looks effortless and elegant, yet there was almost an element of restraint to her wardrobe, as though she was retaining a sense of calm to contrast the chaos of her personal life. It’ll be interesting to see if her style evolves throughout the second season.

Jane Chapman

Shailene Woodley’s character Jane has always dressed in a relaxed way, reflecting her low-key aesthetic and way of living. It’s a practical, fuss-free sense of style, consisting of a collection of wardrobe staples that she can return to, such as skinny jeans, sweatshirts, trainers and flat boots.

Bonnie Carlson

Last but certainly not least, is Zoë Kravitz’s character, Bonnie Carlson, whose style is effortless, bohemian and unique. We can’t get enough of her eclectic wardrobe. From throw-on dresses and free-spirited kimonos to barely-there jumpsuits and relaxed yoga pieces, she’s undeniably cool. Bonnie also layers homemade jewellery collection effortlessly, adding a personal touch to every look.
