The Met Gala, also known as the Oscars of the fashion industry, plays host to the most extraordinary, avant-garde, and talked-about looks of the year. We asked the team at Whistles HQ to nominate their favourite Met Gala outfits of all time, and what it is that makes them so unforgettable…
“Two words: naked dress. Move over Kim K and Beyoncé, Cher’s Bob Mackie feathered number is the most head-turning dress of all time.”
Marketing and PR Coordinator, Naomi.
“I’m a sucker for anything lemon yellow, and absolutely everything about this Calvin Klein look is working for me. The low squared-off neckline, teamed with pared-back make-up and her signature don’t care hair – it’s Kate at her ’90s best.”
Brand and Content Editor, Charlotte.
“If anyone was to prove the Met Gala is about pushing the red carpet boundaries, it would be Donatella Versace wearing a intricate sheer harness complete with gold hardware from the Versace 1992 Bondage Collection. Unapologetically provocative.”
Editorial Assistant, Daniel.
“SJP arrived at the 2006 Met Gala with Alexander McQueen by her side, and they couldn’t be missed. Not only was McQueen in a kilt, but he and Sarah were both wrapped in McQueen’s traditional family tartan combined with tulle, lace and embroidery. So punk rock!”
Creative Online Stylist, Camilla.
“You really can’t get any more iconic than Kate Moss at the Met Gala. Kate Moss was the epitome of the 2009 Met Gala theme, Model as Muse: Embodying in Fashion, in a Marc Jacobs’ grecian-inspired, metallic mini dress. I loved every inch of the supermodel from the twisted headscarf down to her bronzed legs.”
Personal Shopping Manager, Aimee.
“Standout dresses don’t come any braver than a barely-there skin tone gown. I love how elegant Blake’s custom Gucci dress was, and how she finished the look with minimal accessories and old Hollywood curls.”
Digital Marketing and CRM Manager, Puja.
“For me, Ri Ri came out top of the 2015 Met Gala. I really think she epitomised the theme of Chinese opulence with her look and had the same level of confidence to own it. The vibrant yellow complimented her glow perfectly, while the off-shoulder opera coat added an element of elegance so effortlessly!”
Junior Visual Creative Assistant, Khalilah.
“Following Beyoncé’s post-Lemonade album release, everyone speculated what drama would unfold on the red carpet. Without saying a word, Solange made a statement in support of Beyoncé wearing a lemonade yellow dress with accordion-like pleats, finished with a pair of latex leg warmers. 2016 was the year of Lemonade!”
Press Assistant, Kerry.
“I still can’t decide between Solange’s Thom Browne puffer jacket dress or Cara Delevingne’s futuristic Chanel pantsuit, but as a fellow buzzcut devotee I just have to lean towards Cara.”
Customer Service Advisor, Tolu.
