Although summer begins in June, it often doesn’t feel official until the 4th of July weekend — and what better way to celebrate the start of summer than by spending it with friends and family. From barbecue gatherings and beach outings, to firework viewings and upstate getaways, here are just some of the ways you can spend the holiday in New York City.
July 4th is one of the best times of the year to enjoy one of New York’s open spaces and there is no better place to enjoy a picnic at than Central Park. Sprawling over 800 acres, this iconic urban oasis features lush meadows, scenic lakes and breathtaking florals, such as the Nell Singer Lilac Walk. If you are hoping to have a barbeque you are in luck — the park allows barbecuing on three dates every year and 4th of July is one of them.
Escape the city and spend the weekend in the Hamptons: a group of New York State’s upscale beach communities on Long Island. Be sure to stop by Southampton’s Sant Ambroeus location, spend an afternoon at the Parrish Art Museum, visit the Wolffer Estate Vineyard or go swimming in one of the towns’ many beaches. If you are planning to spend a few days here, drive over to the nearby town of Montauk after-dark to take in the sights at its annual fireworks event.
Just a short bus, train or ferry ride away from Manhattan is the inimitable Rockaway Beach. Known for its vibrant surf and art community, this city beach is just steps away from delicious boardwalk eateries, great vintage shopping, as well as a growing list of music and art venues.
If you prefer woodlands and quaint towns to beaches, a trip to upstate New York will be perfect for you – and the city’s Metro-North train line at Grand Central Station can get you there in mere minutes. Spend the holiday weekend in Beacon, an artist enclave that boasts must-see attractions such as Dia:Beacon and the nearby Storm King Art Center, marvel at the breathtaking Vanderbilt Mansion estate in Hyde Park, or go back in time to the famous town of Woodstock. These upstate getaways can be quick day trips or an overnight stay.
If you would like to spend the holiday close to home, why not spend a relaxing afternoon on the Brooklyn Bridge waterfront followed by the famous Macy’s fireworks display along the East River. The area is a great place to grab lunch, ride the historic Jane’s Carousel and enjoy an array of public art installations. If you plan on staying for the fireworks show, be sure to secure a spot in the park long before sundown as it gets extremely busy during the display.
New York City has dozens of public pools and countless hotels offer places for a dip. Popular community pools, such as the Douglas and Degraw Pool in Brooklyn and the Astoria Park Pool in Queens, are easy to get to and free for locals. If you want a more luxurious experience, be sure to check out Hotel Americano or McCarren Hotel – each offer reasonably priced day passes for pool access.
